Study on the transfer and distribution of water from the river Nestos in the plains of Xanthi and Komotini to restore aquifers. Xanthi Prefecture (EIAS 212 & 263):
These studies constitute the EIpAS and the EIAS of the project. The project aims to utilize the surface waters of the Nestos River to irrigate the plain of Xanthi for the immediate addressing of the problem of saltwater intrusion and lowering of the groundwater level due to over-pumping. The total surface of the areas facing the aforementioned issues and that will be relieved / rehabilitated by the project is 25 ha. In the plains of Xanthi two subregions are distinguished and they are planned to be supplied by 2 autonomous water transfer projects. The first one involves the Eastern plain of Xanthi and has a total net area of 24 ha. The second one involves the Western plain of Xanthi and has a total net area of 6 ha. The water intake for both subregions will not be made directly from Nestos, but from the canals of the existing irrigation project in the east bank of the river. The Eastern plain project requires a total of 165 Km transfer pipelines, Also, requires the construction of 30 storage tanks with a total capacity of about 144.500 m3 and 21 pumping stations with a total installed capacity of 19.800 kW. The Western plain project requires a total of 33 Km transfer pipelines, Also, requires the construction of 1 storage tank with a total capacity of about 37700 m3 and 1 pumping station with a total installed capacity of 4251 kW. In the study, the environmental impacts of the project were examined and evaluated and appropriate measures in order to tackle these effects were suggested.
