Preparation of strategic water management in hydrologic region 8 of Cyprus (ER 102)

PROVISION OF CONSULTING SERVICES FOR THE PREPARATION OF STRATEGIC WATER MANAGEMENT PLAN IN HYDROLOGIC REGION 8 OF CYPRUS RIVER BASIN DISTRICT:Contract No. DITP 20/2011 (ER 102):

The project was implemented in the context of the implementation of the Project 1G-MED08-515/WATERinCORE of the WDD and included the following subjects:

1.   Informing and motivation of the Cyprus HR8 stakeholders on the Water Strategic Plan of the district, which was prepared by WDD.

2.  Conducting social dialogue on water management of HR8 and preparation of a cooperation Protocol with stakeholders.

3. Evaluation of the opinion survey on the water management of HR8.

4. Development of the Water Action Plan for HR8.

Compilation of a Registry of water users at the sectors of competence of the Ministry of Development (Energy, Industry and Trade) and of the Department of Tourism (WRM 2)

Compilation of a Registry of water users at the sectors of competence of the Ministry of Development (Energy, Industry and Trade) and of the Department of Tourism.  Development of Tools  for updating and processing  of the relative data. Installation of a communication network of the individual sectors (WRM 2):

The project aims to record and organize all relevant water use data in the fields of Industry, Energy, Trade and Tourism, so that the Ministry of Development be able to plan, prioritize and select surveys, studies and projects for water resources development at the sectors of its responsibility, but also to formulate a  robust water policy.

Integrated Water Resources Management Region of Crete

Integrated Water Resources Management Region of Crete
This is the Water Resources Management study which was implemented at a water district level (Crete). Within the study’s framework, the following took place:
  1. Determination of the water balance of Crete, following the collection, processing, completion and analysis of the available hydrological and hydrogeological information.
  2. Inventory of the existing and future water demands (domestic water, irrigation, industry, environment and leisure) following the forecast of future growth and economic development of the region.
  3. Evaluation of the current environmental state and determination of environmental constraints for conservation and management of the ecosystem, and
  4. Implementation of an appropriate Water Resources Management Model to impress, in quantitative data, the behavior of existing and proposed infrastructure projects under different water supply scenarios and different scenarios for future growth of the demand.

Supervision for the development of an Integrated Water Monitoring Program (CS 7)

Supervision, monitoring and evaluating the project for the development of an Integrated Water Monitoring Program and related databases that support the implementation of the Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC in Cyprus. Contract No. 45/2005 (C.S. 7):

The Convention aims to provide support to the MANRE of Cyprus to meet its commitments and requirements arising from the provisions of Directive 2000/60 and in particular the management, monitoring, supervision and evaluation of Contracts A and C:

·         Contract A: The supply contract will provide the Contracting Authority with the necessary equipment (sampling and analysis equipment, computer equipment and software, including servers to support Geographical Information System (GIS).

·         Contract C: The purpose of the Convention is to provide services related to the creation of an Integrated Water Monitoring Program and integrated databases to facilitate the implementation of the WFD in Cyprus

Information Protocol for economic analysis of water use - Cyprus

Consulting services for the design of an information protocol to be used for economic analysis of water use and water pricing policies in Cyprus as required by article 9 of the Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC. Contract No WDD8/2006

The aim of the contract is to provide support to the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment of Cyprus to fulfill the provisions of article 9 of WFD, on the future review and updating of the water use economic analysis and implementation of water pricing policies to achieve the environmental objectives of the Directive.

Support Services for the effective implementation of Directive 2000/60/EC - Greece

Support  Services for the effective implementation of Directive 2000/60/EC
The objective of this contract was to provide Consulting Services for  the Central Water Service (MEPW)  of the Ministry of Environment for the analysis required under Article 5 of Directive 2000/60/EC regarding the surface water in every Water District, namely:
  1. Classification of surface water to sub-categories - rivers, lakes, coastal and transitional waters.
  2. Determination of artificial and heavily modified water bodies
  3. Discrimination of surface water in types, according to one of the methods described in Annex II, section (1.2) of the Directive (System "A" or system "B")
  4. Identification of significant pressures and review of the impact of human activities on the status of surface water
  5. Identification of water bodies at risk to achieve the objectives of the Directive as well as of those that require additional data to determine the risk status.
Also the following were implemented:
  • An ''Action Program for implementation of Directive 2000/60/EC'' was conducted nationally.
  • WFD Guidance Documents were translated in Greek
  • Drafts of Legal Documents were prepared as required by Law 3199/2003 for the harmonization of the National Law with the provisions of Directive 2000/60/EC
  • Texts were prepared for the presentation of the required actions to achieve the objectives of  WFD on a water district level.
  • An informative brochure was created to inform the public for the actions taken for the implementation of WFD
  • A relative website was designed
